Why use a digital camera to capture text?

Point and shoot digital cameras are becoming smaller and more powerful every day. They can be carried in a pocket, handbag or briefcase. They’re fast, mobile and produce high quality images perfect for capturing people, places and things that interest us. We use them for fun and for business.

And now you can use them to take pictures of text documents and turn them into documents you can edit. It opens up a whole world of information trapped in the physical world – not just the paper world. OmniPage 16 makes it possible.

It’s perfect for mobile professionals, students and even secret agents. All kidding aside, there is a real need to get technology to work harder and smarter so we can save valuable time and money. That goes for digital cameras as well. And why not use them to capture text if it really worked? It really does work with OmniPage 16.

How do we do it? Why is OmniPage so special in this regard? We’ll tell you. But first, let’s discuss the problems of using a digital camera to capture text.

The problem with digital camera OCR

Using a digital camera image for text capture hasn’t really been successful because optical character recognition (OCR) is fundamentally a two dimensional technology trying to recognize text on a three dimensional object. A scanner produces a nice flat (two dimensional) image of a piece of paper. A photograph captures objects that aren’t usually flat at all. This introduces all kinds of distortion that makes it difficult for optical OCR to work with the kind of accuracy we expect.

Now it’s true that I can be really, really careful to hold a camera just right, directly over a perfectly flat document, on a perfectly flat surface to produce the look of a two dimensional piece of paper. Who has time for that? And what if I want to take a picture of something that’s not perfectly flat like a book or the writing on an actual object? Part of the allure of using a digital camera is that I don’t have to squeeze something onto a scanner; never mind carrying a scanner around with me in the first place.

The solution is OmniPage 16

We looked long and hard at the problems associated with converting pictures into editable text documents and developed a revolutionary solution.

Introducing 3DC Digital Camera Technology exclusively used in OmniPage 16.

It automatically corrects for 3D distortion to produce straight lines of text suitable for digital camera OCR. This amazing technology corrects for skew, waves and perspective at the same time.

Digital Camera 3DC Technology

It produces results you simply won’t believe until you try it for yourself. The accuracy of the recognition is improved by up to 74% just by utilizing 3DC technology. Without 3DC technology no OCR process can recognize distorted text properly. When you combine this fantastic new development with the superior accuracy of the OmniPage OCR engines you get an unbeatable combination that produces the best possible result. Give your digital camera the power to capture text anywhere you go only with OmniPage 16.
