Nuance and Domino’s Win 2015 MediaPost Appy Award

Award Recognizes Dom, the Virtual Assistant within the Domino’s Pizza App, the First Retail and Restaurant App to Feature Voice Ordering, Powered by Nuance

BURLINGTON, Mass., – June 9, 2015Nuance Communications, Inc. today announced that Dom, the virtual assistant created by Nuance and Domino’s for the Domino’s USA mobile app, has won the 2015 MediaPost Appy Award in the Restaurants/Food/Beverage category. MediaPost’s Appy Awards honor extraordinary applications on all platforms: mobile, social and web in a diverse range of categories.

The virtual assistant, Dom, within the Domino’s app was created through close collaboration between Domino’s, the recognized world leader in pizza delivery, and Nuance, the leading provider of voice and language solutions for businesses and consumers around the world.

Dom, the virtual ordering assistant, appears when customers launch the Domino’s app and offers to help take their order – all through voice, as opposed to tapping and scrolling through tiny menus on the mobile phone. Marking a first within both traditional and e-commerce retail, Dom is an extension of the Domino’s brand and allows customers to order their food more easily than ever, without feeling rushed, and while also making the experience fun. Dom’s persona is powered by Nuance’s Nina, an intelligent virtual assistant that leverages speech recognition, speech synthesis and natural language understanding technologies. Domino’s ad agency partner, CP+B, contributed Dom’s look, personality scripts and “vanity commands.”

“It is an honor to be recognized by MediaPost and its distinguished panel of judges for this important award,” said Dennis Maloney, Domino’s chief digital officer. “Integrating Dom, the virtual voice ordering assistant, into our app, has paid tremendous dividends.”

“The Domino’s app and Dom represent the way in which conversational interfaces can be used to elevate the customer experience, while in turn delivering real business and brand value,” said Robert Weideman, executive vice president and general manager for the Enterprise Division of Nuance. “This new generation of customer service applications adapts to and predicts a person’s needs and elicits a personal connection – understanding context, preferences and a range of information relevant to the customer – just as a personal assistant or advisor would.”

The Appy Awards Jury consists of impartial editors, industry visionaries, and senior-level creative strategy leaders from prominent agencies and brands. The judging process is organized and monitored by MediaPost’s Awards and Editorial Team, and is independent of account or sales biases.
